SUMMARY:International Day for Disaster Reduction
DESCRIPTION:By resolution 44/236 (22 December 1989)\, the General Assembly 
 designated the second Wednesday of October International Day for Natural D
 isaster Reduction. The International Day was to be observed annually durin
 g the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction\, 1990-1999.\n\n
 By resolution 64/200 of 21 December 2009 the General Assembly decided to d
 esignate 13 October as the date to commemorate the Day and to change the D
 ay's name to International Day for Disaster Reduction. The objective of th
 e observance is to raise awareness of how people are taking action to redu
 ce their risk to disasters.\n\nThis year the focus of the International Da
 y for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) is on older people. The day highlights the
  need for a more inclusive approach for older people in disaster risk redu
 ction. It recognizes the critical role they can play in better planning an
 d understanding disaster risk\, and how they can help with resilience-buil
 ding in their communities through their experience and knowledge. IDDR 201
 4 will focus on the contributions of older people now\, and also for the p
 ost-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction.\n\n[button link="/tag/inte
