This film explores the intersectionality between racism and religious discrimination by capturing the experience of a number of Black British Muslim converts.
These individuals have experienced anti-black racism as well as islamaphobia, and the film explores the crossover between the two forms of discrimination.
Raising the issue of inter-minority racism, like discussions around colourism, is a painful process, and it’s important to remember that these ‘hierarchies’ arise within a bigger, overarching power structure of white privilege.
While those interviewed speak of suffering from anti-black racism from other Muslims, there is also a commonality of experience, with one noting that ‘many Muslims complain of stop and search and profiling. As a black man I went through that long before I became a Muslim‘.
By sharing these experiences, and understanding that racism and islamaphobia arise through similar processes we can unite to overcome all forms of prejudice.
