In 2005, the General Assembly of the United Nations identified solidarity as one of the fundamental values that should underlie international relations in the 21st century.

As a result, 20 December was proclaimed International Human Solidarity Day. The aim is to remind governments of their commitment to eradicating poverty and promoting social development.
