The UN chose March 24 as The International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims to recognize Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero of El Salvador, a strong voice in the struggle for human rights who was assassinated on that day in 1980. The day serves to honor the memory of victims of human rights violations, to promote the importance of the right to truth and justice, and to pay tribute to those who have devoted their lives to the struggle for human rights.
