Themed Collections

We have collections available which contain material from several different countries, all relating to one theme.

Costs for borrowing any of the Themed Collections, Country Collections and Heritage Boxes are:

1 week loan £10 – borrower collects
1 month loan £30
2 month loan £45

Numeracy
Global Numeracy Collection

Contains books, photos, posters, maps, artefacts and games illustrating the importance of understanding numeracy and the role of mathematics in a variety of cultures.

Oware Collection

Oware is a game originally played in Ghana, which goes under a number of different names in other countries. It is one of the world’s oldest games and is played in some format on every continent of the world! Also known as Isolo, Mancala, Bantumi, Kalah, Bao. The pack consists of information about the game, together with web links and enough Oware sets for a class tournament. A game to engage even the most reluctant learners in developing numeracy skills.

Literacy

Inspiring stories with connections to global issues which can be extended by using GLADE’s Country Collections. Each story is brought alive through objects, clothing and fabrics and photos, in an extensive ‘story sack’. Stories include;

A Triangle for Adoara
A story game about shapes and fabrics, complete with materials and artefacts.

Talking Cloth

A contemporary story about traditions, culture and knowledge of the Ashanti people. The collection includes 5 copies of the story book, photos, fabrics and posters.

Nutmeg Princess

A Caribbean story about two children, a nutmeg orchard and a mysterious princess. The pack includes jigsaw maps, artefacts, photos and activities based on the story.

Kofi and his Magic

A story about a young Ghanaian boy visiting places in his country through his imagination. The collection includes information about the Oware game, Ashanti designs and Kente blankets, as well as maps and photos of Ghana.

Galimoto

The story of an creative child who searches for found items to re-use and create his own toy; a wire car. Included are authentic ‘galimoto’ cars and connections through photos of items made to sustainability themes.

Rama and the Demon King

The story of the brave prince Rama and his battle against Ravana, the evil ten-headed king of all the demons. Included with the pack are costumes, maps and an information wallet on Divali and Hinduism.

A Right to Play Collection

An informative collection of items, stories and materials that looks at one of the most important Child Rights; the right to play. Posters, activity packs include ways to bring this key Right of the Child to children and teens

Firecrackers & Lanterns

An Early Years type story, with themes of Lunar New Year and Chinese New Year.  Authentic items help children and reluctant readers connect with the story and encourage making connections.

Sam & the Lucky Money

A story, with themes of Lunar New Year and Chinese New Year.  Authentic items help bring this festival alive, exploring values, togetherness and encourage making connections.

The Suitcase

Chosen for themes of heritage, travel and migration, this box brings the story alive with a table, 2 chairs and a selection of cups and saucers, gathered from Somerset residents. Included are creative suggestions for sharing experiences, memories, hopes and dreams.

Southern Africa Music

Instruments and recorded music from South Africa and surrounding countries in the Southern African region. Information leaflets, games and websites contribute to this multimedia collection.

West Africa Music

Many different instruments from across the region, together with photos, information, CD’s, CD ROM’s and cassettes. This pack illustrates the vast range of materials and ideas that contribute to music-making in West Africa.

Worldwide Music

A selection of instruments from across the world together with photos, information, CD’s. This collection begins to show the vast range of materials and ideas that contribute to music-making worldwide.

Household items and clothes from Eritrea.
Sustainable Living

3Rs Toys Collection

A selection of games and toys that make use of re-used, recycled, reclaimed materials. An informative collection of supporting materials that consider how children the world over learn through play.

3Rs in the Home Collection

Not reading, writing and arithmetic, but Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! Lots of countries make excellent use of materials that have been re-used, reclaimed, recycled, to create a more sustainable way of living, often these are brought together in the home. An informative collection of everyday items used in homes around the world; covers issues such as waste management and environmental education in the context of sustainable living.

India School and Play

Toys, games and books to illustrate patterns of play in India. The pack contains posters and photos, as well as examples of toys and games for children to use.

Galimoto

Galimoto is a toy vehicle made from wire. This collection contains some examples of galimoto and a teaching activity pack to explore the issue of waste and recycling. Also a Literacy Collection

Interfaith & Belief

Collections of items and activity boxes, to encourage new conversations around faith, belief and lived-by values.  These items were curated to encourage new conversations on interfaith and belief themes.  Items help seek out lesser known, almost forgotten stories to bring a wider Somerset connection, drawing in interested communities and localities. 

Includes Somerset Candle for Holocaust Memorial & Peace, available for loan at the conclusion of it’s county-wide tour during 2025 & 2026

Heritage Collections & mini displays

Heritage Boxes contain heritage items, memorable objects grouped in themes, countries or a loose time in history with supporting materials, images and activities. All of the items can be handled to help people of all ages get a real feel for the past and the present, the familiar and the new. These collections were curated during our project A Place Called Home, made possible with heritage Fund,  and encouraging people of all ages to start new conversations, to be curious and to learn about each other.

Each box contains a selection of authentic items, many with a ‘people story’ behind them, and often sourced from country or region of origin, sometimes donated with a family/ community memory attached.

Heritage-themed Taster Book Boxes

While curating Heritage Boxes, we curated booklists to enrich learning and prompt curiosity around heritage themes. Some are available as taster book boxes, with 6-10 books.

Interfaith & Belief-themed Taster Book Boxes

In response to requests, we’ve curated book boxes of around 6-10 books for Interfaith & Belief themes

Early Years

A range of hands-on collections available to borrow with a focus on Early Years themes such as  identity and diversity, water, play, homes, transport and food. Resources, books, stories, musical instruments and home corner boxes can be browsed and borrowed to enrich the learning of your little global citizens.These offer inspirational, practical and fun ways to promote positive attitudes to diversity, similarity and difference, and help you bring the world to your place. Collections have been co-curated with Early Years practitioners worldwide and include:-

Ghana Early Years; based on exploring counting, colours, shapes, includes the story ‘Deron goes to Nursery’

Ethiopia/ Eritrea Early Years; explore some unfamiliar items and become curious

India Early Years; Clothes, kitchen items help illustrate some ‘big book’ stories.

Raji’s School Bag; a boy and a girls school bag helps explore 2 children as they start school.

West Africa Home Corner; home corners are a staple in EY settings worldwide.  These items are inspired by familes with heritage or connections to West Africa
